What the heck was I thinking?
At 57 years old, many of my colleagues are easing towards retirement.
I started my own practice. Why?
Because I can do better for my patients.
My hope is that by describing my experience in summer 2024 that other clinicians may feel empowered to create their own practice model to provide care as they would want their own families to receive. Unfortunately, this is much harder than it should be within the context of the American healthcare system but certainly not impossible.
Those who seek treatment for severe anxiety and posttraumatic stress are hurting. They deserve the very best in compassionate care delivered in a way that is warm, safe, and effective. It’s been my experience of treating patients with anxiety and PTSD that HOW I treat them is just as important as WHAT I do. I happen to be very good technically at performing an ultrasound-guided SGB procedure; however, what makes a big difference in my care is taking time with my patients to explain why this treatment works and to share my experience of treating patients from a variety of backgrounds with similar questions and concerns. This matters, quite a bit. Taking time with patients is not exactly incentivized in our healthcare system with insurance plans being the ones who make the rules, rather than the clinicians.

A voice kept nudging me to create something better—to eliminate limits imposed by an employer and system whose interests, financial or otherwise, which were at odds with my own values. That voice was my wife, Jodi, as well as some of my best friends who know me well.
After much thought and prayer, I quit my old job. Then, we started over.
My goal was to create a welcoming, safe, comfortable treatment space unlike a typical doctor’s office and altogether different than a scary operating suite, which is where many other physicians perform SGB under fluoroscopy. Jodi found an excellent option for a clinic located a short drive from Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Airport, since many patients fly in from other states and even other countries to receive SGB treatment from me. Waugh Chapel in Gambrills, Maryland was a great location, and setting up the clinic was an adventure!
